Tripura police accused of pressurising journalist to withdraw case

Agartala: Tripura Police is accused of pressurising a photo-journalist to withdraw a case, filed against a local club secretary who has allegedly been trying to evict the victim’s family from the locality.

The victim photo-journalist Raju Bhowmik alleged that police led by Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), Central Rajendra Datta and Officer In-charge of east Agartala police station S Basu Roychowdhury had stormed his house before yesterday and asked the photo journalist’s family to withdraw the case.

Raju had filed a case against one Sekhar Pal, a land-mafia also running a club in Kumaritilla area of Agartala allegedly for beating him and his pregnant wife during immersion of idol Devi Durga on October 16 last.

Allegedly, after beating them, the accused had facilitated his sister to lodge molestation charge against Raju in connivance with a section of police officers. With the complaint police arrested him next day and sent him to jail.

On October 25 this year, Raju was bailed, as police found the allegation labelled against him baseless.

Raju also alleged that police had refused to accept the complaint of his mother and following pressure from Tripura Working Journalists Association (TWJA) police had registered case against Sekhar Pal and two others but did not arrest him. (UNI)
