Education key to poverty alleviation:

JOWAI: Speaking at a Parent’s Day Celebration, Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma stressed upon the need to educate children as it was the only investment that would materialize for a poor family.

“Our children and their children will no longer be subjected to poverty provided they are well educated,” Dr. Sangma told parents at Umkiang on Wednesday.

“Until we start, we should not say that we cannot support our children’s education as it is an investment not only for our children but for the society and the community at large,” he added.

He called upon parents to access various Government programmes and schemes initiated for better education of the children.

Thousands of people from Umkiang area greeted the Chief Minister in his maiden visit to the area to attend the Parents’ Day Celebration at Holy Cross Higher Secondary School, Umkiang in East Jaintia Hills on Wednesday.

The Chief Minister was accompanied by Member of Parliament, Vincent H Pala, MLAs including Hopeful Bamon, Justine Dkhar, Stephanson Mukhim and Robinus Syngkon beside the JHADC Chief, MB Rymbaiand others MDCs – MS Tyngkra, Joinriwel Pyrtuh, Amos Dkhar and Hambertus Nongtdu.

The parents, the Chief Guest and other invitees were enthralled by various performances by students of the school. Students performed various dances and songs to entertain the Chief Minister.

“The Chief Minister’s visit will not only benefit the purpose of the school celebration of the Parents’day but also will benefit the people of this area”, Vicent Pala said adding that the Chief saw the bumpy road condition and said that he would do something to ease the communication problems of the people.
