SHILLONG: KHADC CEM Pynshngaiñ N Syiem has asserted that the Council would not allow the proposed Meghalaya Regulation of Landlords and Verification of Tenants Bill to trample upon the customary practices as mandated by the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.

There is a fear that formalities to be fulfilled under the proposed Bill will undermine the role of district councils.

“We have decided to study the draft of the proposed bill in details,” Syiem said while addressing newsmen here on Monday.

He also informed that he would be circulating the draft bill to all the MDCs.

“After ascertaining the views and suggestions of the MDCs, the Executive Committee would then submit its views on the draft bill to the State Government,” Syiem said.

Meanwhile, the KHADC CEM said that the Council would soon be convening a meeting of traditional heads of various Dorbar Shnong and Hima to discuss the prevailing law and order situation in the State.

“We would take the collective views of all the traditional heads on how to end this impasse,” Syiem said.

He, however, feels that the Government should take necessary steps to defuse this ongoing tension which has affected the common man of the State.
