SHILLONG: The Khasi Students’ Union, Barak Valley Circle has expressed their support to the ILP movement stirred by the 14 NGOs of the State affirming that the demands are genuine and need to be pursued by the State government to protect the indigenous communities of the State.
“We don’t want to see our community being reduced to a minority in our own State like the tribals in Barak Valley Assam, Assam and other North Eastern states,” KSU Publicity Secretary Trusting Shylla said adding “We, as Khasis who were born and brought up here (Assam), have no problems in arranging our documents to go to Meghalaya if ILP is implemented, because we know that this move is done to protect our own race.”
He also stated that implementation of ILP will not affect or hinder any genuine citizens of the State who have their authentic documents to prove their identity.
The Union has also opposed the proposed move of the State government to implement the Tenancy Act instead of the ILP stating that this proposed Act is ineffective and toothless and will in no way, curb the problem of influx in the State.
