Assam pays rich tribunte to Bhupen Hazarika on death anniversary

Guwahati: Over 10,000 earthen lamps illuminated the banks on a lake in the heart of Guwahati city as thousands of people gathered there to pay obeisance to the artiste of their heart, legendary musician Late Dr Bhupen Hazarika on the occasion of his 2nd death anniversary on Tuesday.

The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) organised the innovating tribute paying in a solemn atmosphere under the open sky on the bank of Dighalipukhuri where a statue of Dr Hazarika stands tall.

It was just one of the hundreds of functions organised all over Assam on Tuesday by individuals, communities, NGOs, cultural bodies and the government administration to pay glowing respect to the colossal musician who continues to dominate the cultural landscape on Assam even after his death through his timeless creations.

The State government organised the central ‘shraddhanjali’ programme at Bhupen

Hazarika Samadhi Khsetra in Guwahati this morning where dignitaries and fans of Dr Hazarika gathered to pay their respect to the musician who is still Organisations of different hues and nomenclature have organised the death anniversary in various corners of the State in different styles to pay tribute to the ‘The Bard of Brahmaputra’.

Now when our times bleed, when it threatens one’s identity, Dr Hazarika’s songs preaching world brotherhood and human bonding are relevant more than ever.

The Cultural Affairs Department of Assam Government in collaboration with K K Handique Open University and Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) organised a lecture in the memory of Dr Hazarika besides a mega cultural programme to pay tribute to him.

Hazarika into an architectural marvel within a year at an estimated cost of Rs 10 crore.

In order to preserve and promote the ideology, philosophy of the ‘Bard of Brahmaputra’ who all along his life tried to give voice to teeming millions of voiceless though his melodies, the government plans to develop his burial site at Jalukbari here into a green zone complete with a souvenir shop, a musical fountain and a dome.

The structural design of the project has already been accepted by the government.
