Man masquerading as IPS officer arrested in city

SHILLONG: The special cell of the East Khasi Hills police on Monday arrested an employee of the Shillong Cantonment Board from Keating Road for impersonating an IPS officer in the rank of Superintendent of Police as well as a Raw agent under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The accused, identified as Subhash Chakraborty interestingly, has also been impersonating officers of the Indian Air Force, Navy and Army.

SP (City) Vivek Syiem said that police had been following up on this person for the past few days till they were able to arrest him. Syiem informed that the accused has been working as a gardener in the Shillong Cantonment Board since 1992.

Following Chakraborty’s arrest, Syiem said, police raided his residence in the Cantonment Board quarter at Jhalupara and seized various equipment, books and documents.

The SP (City) informed that police have seized a large number of educational qualifications forms of youths aspiring for jobs in the Indian Army and the accused could be a part of a big scam.

“We have to go into the details of this case before coming to any conclusion. We have not been able to interrogate the person yet,” Syiem said.

Syiem also informed that police are trying to find out if Chakraborty has any accomplices. Interestingly, the police also seized a police uniform, pee cap, identity cards, air gun and a toy gun besides medals and other things.
