Skill development programmes for unemployed on the anvil

Govt sanctions Rs 5 cr from State Plan Fund

HILLONG: The State Government has sanctioned Rs 5 crore from the State Plan Fund for the launch of skill development programmes for unemployed youths of Meghalaya.

The programme, to be launched by the State Labour Department, is expected to benefit nearly 3000 unemployed youths who will be offered training on data entry, hospitality management , banking services, aviation, beauty care and international BPO services besides others.

Informing this here on Tuesday, Labour Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh said that Government has selected ten service providers, to impart training, after following a proper bidding process and under this scheme Rs 21,000 to Rs 25,000 will be spent on each participant.

Initially, the skill training would be provided to around 2800 youths and all the service providers have assured 80-100 per cent placement assistance to those taking part in the training programme.

Lyngdoh said that the Government is mulling to start the courses from January and the first slot of trainees would complete their courses by May. “The duration of the certificate and diploma courses will range from three to six months,” Lyngdoh said.

“Most of the placements would be outside the state,” she said.

The courses would be conducted at training centres in Shillong, Jowai, Tura, Sohra, Williamnagar, Ampati, Khliehriat beside other places.

“The target group for the programme are youths including drop outs,” Lyngdoh said adding that the department has stressed on the safety of the youths who would be going outside the state for their placement.

“Service providers must take the responsibility of their security,” she said.

The State Labour department is likely to sign the MoUs with the service providers in December, the firms would be given two months time to develop their ‘state of the art’ study centres in the state.

Lyngdoh said that the government would review the entire programme in June next year and launch it in a much bigger way if the current one gives the desired results.
