Govt officials get demand note

SHILLONG: Several Meghalaya government officials serving in the militancy-hit Garo Hills have received demand notes ranging between Rs 5 lakh and Rs 15 lakh issued by the proscribed insurgent outfit GNLA and ULA in the last few day.

The District Transport Officer of Baghmara has been served with an extortion note. The official lodged a complaint that he received a demand note of Rs. 5 lakh from GNLA on October 28.

In another incident, one Watseng M. Sangma lodged a complaint that on October 29 he received a packet which contained one 7.62 live ammunition and a demand note of Rs. 15 lakh from UALA.

Interestingly, again on November 1 and 12, he received text message in which the sender demanded Rs. 5 lakh instead of Rs. 15 lakh and also threatened him with dire consequences if he fails to pay the amount, official sources said on Friday.

Police, meanwhile, picked up two persons on suspicion of having links with militant groups from South West Khasi Hills

The arrested persons have been identified as Julius R. Marak and Anup Sangma.
