Editor,
The recent violence in the city and its suburbs is disturbing the minds of every citizens. It is disastrous and if it continues further the society will reap nothing but irreparable losses, be it in terms of economic, social life, politics and most of all the damaging psychological effects in the minds of the young ones. The citizens of Shillong though not supporting Bandhs, Road blocks and other forms of harassment to public, yet they have no say due to threat of violence. Therefore the press is of the impression that the citizens support the agitation and spread the news like hot cakes which further encourage the NGOs to resort to more harassments.
Therefore it is high time for sensible and responsible persons of the city to rise to the occasion, organize a public rally and call a spade a spade, even if we have to hurt the emotions of the agitating NGOs. The question is who will bell the cat?

What students union this?
Editor,
With the ongoing tussle between the NGOs and the Government on the issue of implementation of Inner Line Permit in the State, the Khasi Students Union, a premier Students Organization in the State is also taking a very active part. It is learnt through the media that its activists are involved in many subversive activities and this has brought shame to the genuine students, especially those who are pursuing studies outside the state and abroad.
Many leaders in the past and present are using this particular organization as their political platform. The issue raised and even the pledge to fight for the cause of `Hynniewtrep’ (Seven Huts), are for their political mileage only. Some have succeeded, while some do not. Those who succeed forgot about the issues and their pledge to fight for the cause of Hynniewtrep. However, they even amended the building construction laws and constructed `seven storied buildings’ for themselves.
It is, therefore, suggested that the organization be rechristened as Khasi Political Union (KPU) and let the genuine students of the State run the Khasi Students Union without any office building and Finance Secretary, for the interest of the genuine students.

Merit in seniority
Editor,
Why `search’ for the MPSC Chairperson? On four different occasions in the last ten years, a Chairperson had been appointed without searching but by appointing the senior most member of the Commission. Every member has been in the MPSC for some years. To think that a senior most member is not fit to become Chairman is wrong. If it is not wrong, why did the government appoint him or her in the first place at the beginning? For the improvement of MPSC, a protracted search will not do magic. The senior member is already armed with experience although not always and not necessarily having high qualification. After all he or she will not be able to remain in that post for long. Appointing an honest efficacious and honest member can very well be done at the earliest.

Imagine…..
Editor,
Imagine if the ILP or Tenancy Act is implemented in Meghalaya, there will be no more scope for commercial activities in the state. Outside students will no longer study in this state, tourists will think ten times before visiting Meghalaya, good doctors and project consultants will not venture here. For example my contract projects are now in a standstill because of non availability of labour. The only brisk business that one can do is drug trafficking, commercial crimes like kidnapping, blackmail, hired killing and Menshohnoh.
I have decided to get myself deregistered from PWD, PHE, etc, dispose off my properties and get a huge sum of cash so that I could bid for running one of the ILP check gates because running an ILP check gate will fetch me very good revenue. Do you know how? Like taxation, DMR, Transport and other government check gates the ILP check gates also will be leased out to private firms for efficient operation. I propose to operate the check gates with the help of members of NGOs. To ensure more profit, I will charge entry fee more than the rate fixed by Government and on top of that I will sell permits in black market and allow people to enter Meghalaya on payment of an attractive amount. The money collected will then be shared with the NGO members so that no one can dare question my operation. Politicians and officers who help me in getting the lease will also be rewarded suitably.
