Security forces launch offensive against GNLA

Twin encounter in GH, rebel shot dead

TURA: The State police commandos have shot dead the area commander of GNLA for Ampati region near Garobadha in West Garo Hills while another police team in remote South Garo Hills district was engaged in a gun battle with cadres of the same outfit on Thursday afternoon.

Police commandos from SWAT unit raided Sonabil village near Garobadha after receiving information about the existence of a makeshift camp of the GNLA located in the area.

The security forces were crossing the village and proceeding towards the nearby forest when they were attacked by the militants from their camp leading to an exchange of fire.

In the encounter the area commander for Ampati identified Indian A Sangma (23) hailing from the same village was killed and a pistol with one magazine recovered.

The militant is said to be the main suspect in the killing of three civilians at Monabari area in the month of September, this year.

On the night of September 16th, GNLA militants raided Garodoba village in neighbouring south West Garo Hills district and shot dead Anirudha Hajong and two women, Sredina Sangma and Chandrabala Hajong, in cold blood.

“GNLA commander Indian Sangma who was killed today led the attack on the village. We have strong evidence of his involvement,” said district police chief Mukesh Kr Singh.

Prior to the raid, police teams apprehended a GNLA militant from Tura who was identified as Jackuis A Sangma (20). He hailed from Sonabil village.

Based on his information security forces raided the village and killed the GNLA cadre.

In South Garo Hills a police team that was conducting anti-insurgency operations in Nangalbibra region was fired upon by a group of suspected GNLA militants leading to exchange of fire by both sides for quite some time.
