New Assembly building

SHILLONG: After the promise of Assembly Speaker AT Mondal to construct the new Assembly building at the earliest, nothing has moved beyond assurance.

Seven months after the Assembly passed a resolution entrusting the High Power Committee (HPC) to find out ways and means to construct the new Assembly building, there has been no palpable progress.

“A search committee to find out a suitable place for the construction of the new Assembly is yet to be formed as there was no response from the Government regarding the matter,” an official of the Assembly said on Sunday.

When the Assembly passed the resolution in April this year, the HPC was in favour of constructing the new Assembly at Mawdiangdiang.

However, this move was delayed as the CAG has unearthed a scam which indicated that the Assembly Secretariat in 2004 had paid Rs 2.14 crore for construction of the Assembly building at Mawdiangdiang to a firm without calling tender.

Protest from land owners of New Shillong Township for various Government projects is another hurdle for land acquisition at Mawdiangdiang.
