SHILLONG: Following the suspension of two police personnel who were involved in a highway robbery case at Mawryngkneng, East Khasi Hills, police are now investigating if other police personnel were involved in the crime.

East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police M Kharkrang said that the two police personnel including a police officer have been suspended following their arrest while the case of the third accused, who is a constable with the Meghalaya Police Radio Organisation (MPRO), is being taken care of by the authority concerned.

The trio was arrested for their direct involvement in looting a truck (AS-01-EC-0515) loaded with non ferrous metal scrap including copper, brass and aluminum worth Rs 20.10 lakh on November 7.

When asked whether the Officer In charge (OC) of Mawryngkneng Police Station has been interrogated, Kharkrang refused to divulge any details, while stating that the matter was under investigation.

“We are still interrogating the arrested cops to find out whether other personnel are involved in the crime,” Kharkrang said.

Meanwhile, when asked about the security arrangement along the Shillong Bypass, Kharkrang informed that police patrolling teams have been asked to carry out round-the-clock vigil to ensure safety and security of the travelers and truck drivers.

Recently, a proposal was made to the government regarding the setting up of a police station at Diengpasoh area on the Shillong Bypass to keep track of unwanted highway criminal activities like robbery, extortion and the likes.

“At present we are still operating from Mawryngkneng police station and the government is still working on the proposal,” Kharkrang added.
