Agartala: Aiming to expand the higher education scope in the state, the state government plans to convert the MBB College into a state-run University by 2015-16 academic session.
Revealing the government’s plan, High Education Minister Bhanu Lal Saha on Friday said a committee under the leadership of the Higher Education Secretary has already started working on the plan.
Based on the application, the UGC team is supposed to visit the MBB College to assess the feasibility of having University at MBB College. Before this, the government will have to appoint faculty members for the proposed Varsity.
An amount of Rs. 15 crore is likely to be spent annually to run the proposed University. According to Saha, the government plans to covert the MBB College into Presidency University which is offering both Bachelor degree as well master degrees. “The panel is now examining the Presidency model”, he added.
Meanwhile, a full-fledged English Medium College would be functional by next academic session (2014-15) and the old Central Jail will house the proposed degree college.
Giving details on it, Saha said initially all the three streams- Science, Arts and Commerce would be introduced in the proposed college. And later, job oriented courses like B. Sc (IT), B.SC (Microbiology), B. Sc (Bio-technology) and B. Sc (Computer Science).
The intake capacity of the proposed college will be 400.
As per the preliminary assessment, the old Central Jail will be well enough to house the 400-seated degree college. Later, based on the need, necessary infrastructure could be raised.
