SHILLONG: Assembly Speaker AT Mondal on Sunday urged the Government to amend existing rules to enforce proper legislation and regulative measures to eliminate all forms of discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS.

Speaking at the World AIDS Day function held at U Soso Tham Auditorium on Sunday, Mondal said there should be efforts on the part of the Government to implement proper legislation to empower the victims.

To ensure that people living with HIV/AIDS lead a life of dignity, any form of discrimination against them should be made a punishable offence, the Speaker stated.

He also stressed on the need of creating awareness in this regard at all levels.

“The awareness on HIV/AIDS should also include various measures to remove the discrimination aimed at restoring the rights of people living with HIV/AIDS, care for children and mothers,” Mondal said.

As President of Meghalaya Legislators Forum on HIV/AIDS, Mondal said he would take up with the Government on the financial contribution of the legislators for various activities concerning HIV/AIDS.

He suggested the Government to include lessons on HIV/AIDS in the school and college curriculum.
