SHILLONG: The Delimitation Committee constituted by KHADC is likely to submit its report by December 13.

“We have completed the exercise of holding public hearing. The final public hearing was held in Shillong on Monday,” a member of the delimitation committee said on Monday.

Besides Shillong, he said that they held public hearing at Nongpoh, Nongstoin and Mawkyrwat.

The member informed that they would immediately start compiling the report on the proposal of the Council to delimitate the constituencies.

“We are going to submit the report by December 13,” another member of the committee informed.

Earlier, the Delimitation Committee constituted by the KHADC had been given an extension till the first week of December to submit its report.

The Committee was earlier asked to submit its report by November 23.

When asked about the preliminary finding of the committee, he said that there was not much opposition in the three districts — Ri-Bhoi, West Khasi Hills and South West Khasi — to the proposal of delimiting the constituencies by the Council.

“Except asking for minor changes, majority of people are happy with the move,” he said.

He said that the people in these three districts wanted the delimitation to be similar with the delimitation of the Assembly constituencies.

“Majority of the people in Ri-Bhoi are happy with the move to create the Umsning constituency,” a member of the committee said. He, however, revealed that majority of the villages from Laitkroh area are opposing the move to do away with the Laitkroh constituency.

With the proposed delimitation, the areas falling under Laitkroh constituency have been attached to various district council constituencies like Mylliem, Langkyrdem and Sohra.

The member also revealed that the Committee, through the delimitation exercise, wants villages to be attached to the constituencies in their respective districts.

“We would not want a village under South West Khasi Hills to be attached to a constituency in East Khasi Hills,” the member explained.

He however said that the final call whether to accept or reject the report of the committee will depend on the Executive Committee of the Council.
