Guwahati:  The 12-hour Assam bandh called by Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) on Friday protesting the proposed Upper House in the state Assembly evoked mixed response with no report of any untoward incident.
The capital city largely remained largely unaffected by the bandh as most of the government and private establishments functioning normally during the day, but attendance was less.
Although state transport services was on its full strength during the bandh from 5 AM to 5 PM, most of the private city busses and a section of autorickshaws abstained from the road, leading to inconvenience to the commuters.
In Nagaon district, the impact was visible as most of the business establishments closed their shutters.
However, banks, government offices, educational centres and judicial services were open with thin attendance.
The bandh was complete in the Barak valley with almost every establishments deciding to remain close.
Streets wore a deserted look in Silchar town as no vehicle plied on the road. All shops, banks, offices and educational institutes remained closed.
When contacted, Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) S N Singh told PTI “There was little impact of the bandh in the state. No incident was reported from any part of the state. It was completely peaceful.” He claimed that all the markets, offices, institutes were opened and transport system operated normally. (PTI)
