Dimapur police rescues abducted truck driver & handyman
Kohima: Dimapur police arrested two people and recovered one .32 pistol with two live rounds of ammunition from their possession in connection with the abduction of a driver and a handyman of a truck. Police also rescued both the driver and the handyman. In a press release, PRO said the two arrested on Monday last have been identified as Atoka Achumi (21), son of Pukhato Achumi of Awotsakilimi village, Zunheboto district presently residing at Chumukedima Ward No 10 and Sabu Uddin (31), Doboka, Nagaon district presently residing at Chumudekima Warn No 2. The arrest took place after police received information that some occupants of an unregistered gypsy had hijacked a truck from near Patkai bridge. Police swung into action and intercepted the truck at Chumukedima town. On seeing the police, the person driving the truck managed to escape under the cover of darkness. Police took custody of the truck. At around 2000 hrs police chased the unregistered gypsy as it came down and there was exchange of fire between the occupants of the gypsy and the police. The gypsy was finally intercepted and the two were arrested. Both the arrested confessed to kidnapping the driver and the handyman of the truck. Police accordingly rescued them. A case has been registered. (UNI)
BJP gears up for LS elections
Imphal: BJP Manipur has started campaigning for the ensuing Lok Sabha elections. Though both the seats in Manipur are now hold by Congress and BJP has never won in earlier Parliamentary elections the party is optimistic that there will be a change of fortune this time. Th Chaoba, President BJP Manipur said there are many ticket seekers and a final decision will be taken soon. He further said many politicians have recently joined the BJP. Chaoba informed that former ministers, MLAs including Samuel Jendai, Henry Paotei, Prof Joykumar, Soso Shaiza and others have joined the BJP. He further said to campaign for the party in the state BJP Prime Ministerial candidate, Narendra Modi will be coming on Feb 8 next. Other BJP leaders including BJP vice-president, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi , Nirmala Sitharaman will also be campaigning for the party he said. To start with the party will organise public meetings at various places and take up issues specially corruption he added. (UNI)
Assam gets new DGP
Guwahati: Khagen Sarma, who headed the state’s special branch during the most crucial period of state’s insurgency and was instrumental in bringing several insurgent groups overground, has been appointed as Assam’s new director general of police. The 1982-batch IPS officer is now serving as DG of Civil Defence and Home Guards in the state. Sarma will take over as head of the State police force when present DG, J N Choudhury, relinquishes it to join as the head of the elite National Security Guards. Choudhury is likely to hand over charge on January 26. During his career as an IPS officer, Mr Sarma had served as SP of the districts of Karimganj, North Cachar Hills and Jorhat and served as Principal of the Police Training College. He also served as DIG of Police of the Northern Range before joining the Special Branch as DIG in 1997. He served as DIG, IGP and Additional DG in the Special Branch before taking over as DG of Civil Defence and Home Guards in August last year. He has never been on deputation outside the state. (UNI)
Union MoS for agri visits Mizoram
Aizawl: Union minister of state for agriculture and food processing Dr Charan Das Mahant, who had a review meeting with state officials here on Friday, expressed satisfaction over how central schemes are being implemented in the state. Dr Mahant appreciated the efforts of the various line departments in the agriculture and allied sectors and expressed satisfaction in the way schemes was being implemented in the state. The high level meeting which was chaired by Lalram Thanga, IFS, principal secretary, agriculture department reviewed among others, the progress of various central government schemes such as Rashtriya Krishi Vikash Yojana (RKVY), National Horticulture Mission (NHM) and National Mission of Food Processing (NMFP). The meeting at the State Guest House conference hall was attended by R Lalzirliana, agriculture minister of Mizoram, Lt Col (Rtd) Z S Zuala, parliamentary secretary and officers of agriculture and allied departments.
