NONGSTOIN: On Monday morning around 20 unidentified men carrying heavy arms were seen at Nongrathaw, about 4 km from Shallang, in West Khasi Hills District. They approached a check gate owned by one Honsen Lyngdoh and began extorting money from all the trucks at the rate of Rs 15000 each.

The police who were notified about the incident, quickly rushed to the scene, but the armed miscreants, suspected to be GNLA cadres, had already fled the scene.

Meanwhile, police sources claimed that demand notes had been served in the name of the GNLA. However, they claimed that when they got to the scene, no demand note was recovered.

Police personnel are combing the area to trace the armed group of men, sources informed.
