Bridge collapse in West Garo Hills

SHILLONG: The Magisterial Inquiry report on the collapse of an under-construction PWD bridge at A·konggre in West Garo Hills on January 4, causing injury to three workers, has revealed the use of sub-standard materials for the construction of the bridge.

West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Pravin Bakshi stated that the report indicates that there was an attempt on the part of the contractor to conceal the quality of timber that was used in the construction.

The report of the magisterial inquiry was submitted recently to the West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner.

Magistrate Tangchiring K Sangma carried out the inquiry and was assisted by the Executive Engineer, DRDA, in the task.

According to Bakshi, the district administration would seek clarifications from the PWD to see if the technical specifications were appropriate following which necessary actions would be initiated.

Out of eight labourers who were engaged in construction work, three were injured when the bridge suddenly collapsed on January 4 evening.

Police picked up the contractor identified as Kartus R Marak, a resident of Araimile, Tura, who was released later
