Bihar youth held in Chennai for raping German girl

Chennai: A 22-year-old youth from Bihar has been arrested here for raping an 18-year-old German girl while travelling on the Mangalore-Chennai West Coast Express, police said. Chandan Kumar was arrested by railway police on Tuesday evening. “We have arrested Chandan Kumar, aged 22, a carpenter working in Sriperumbudur. He and the German girl were travelling together from Mangalore to Chennai on Jan 10. They were sharing a RAC (reservation against cancellation) seat,” Inspector General of Police (Railways) Seema Agarwal told IANS. She said the girl came here to work in a non-governmental organisation. Agarwal said though the incident happened on the night of January 10 and the train reached Chennai on January 11 evening, the girl filed her complaint on January 13. (IANS)

IM co-founder, aide claim threat to life inside Tihar jail

New Delhi: Indian Mujahideen (IM) co-founder Yasin Bhatkal and an aide, arrested for their alleged roles in various terror strikes in India, on Wednesday moved a special NIA court claiming there was a threat to their lives inside the high-security Tihar Jail where they are currently lodged. In an application filed before district judge IS Mehta, Bhatkal and Asadullah Akhtar claimed Tihar Jail superintendent had ‘threatened’ them they would be killed and ‘attitude and behaviour’ of prison authorities towards them were abusive. “The superintendent of jail has threatened the accused (Bhatkal and Akhtar) that they would be killed in jail. The attitude and behaviour of jail authorities towards the accused persons is abusive and they are being treated even worse than animals,” the plea, filed through advocate MS Khan, said. They also claimed there was ‘apprehension that any untoward incident may take place with the accused’. In their plea, both the accused urged the court to pass necessary directions to the Director General of Tihar Jail to ensure their proper security and safety inside the prison. (PTI)

153 medicos suspended in MP over PMT fraud

Bhopal: Authorities cracked the whip on 153 MBBS students in Madhya Pradesh, some of whom have passed out, for allegedly using ‘unfair means’ to clear Pre-Medical Tests (PMT) in the state, suspending those who are still studying. The state’s Medical Education Director Dr SS Khushwaha said on Wednesday all the 153 students had gained admissions to MBBS coursse in three medical colleges between 2006 and 2012. Police have registered FIRs against them for their alleged involvement in adopting unfair practices to clear the tests, he said. Out of 153 students, 97 students belonged to Gajra Raje Medical College, Gwalior, who had enrolled for the course between 2006 and 2010; 33 students of Shyam Shah Medical College, Rewa, who had taken admission between 2006 and 2012; and 23 students of Bundelkhand Medical College, Sagar, who had enrolled in 2010.
