2 killed, many hurt as train hits car
Vayalpadu: Two persons were killed on the spot and as many injured when the car in which they were travelling was hit by a passenger train at an unmanned railway leevl crossing in between Piler and Kalikiri in Chittor District on Saturday. South Central Railway (SCR) Chief Public Relation Officer (CPRO) Sambasiva Rao told UNI the accident occurred when the car driver failed to notice train no 57475 Tirupati-Guntakal Passenger. The injured were shifted to a local hospital. There was no damage to the railway track, Mr Rao said and added the train also left from the spot. Meanwhile, Guntakal Railway Division officials left for the spot in a special train. Mr Rao also appealed to the public to watch both sides of the railway track before crossing the unmanned railway crossing. (UNI)
Businessman shot dead in Munger
Munger: A businessman was shot dead by unidentified criminals near his residence at Najri village under Kharagpur police station area in Munger district late on Friday night. Police said here today that businessman Bindeshwari Prasad Singh was shot dead by unidentified criminals near his residence at Najri village late last night. They managed to escape from the spot after the incident. ‘Motive behind the killing was being investigated’, police said adding that raids were being carried out to nab the killers. Agitated over the killing, local people paralysed the movement of traffic on Havelikharagpur-Gangta main road on Saturday for three hours and they lifted the blockade only after intervention of senior officers of the district administration, police further added. Tight security for R- Day fete in TN
Chennai: Elaborate security arrangements were put in place to prevent any untoward incident in Tamil Nadu on the occasion of Republic Day. Police sources said here today, as part of fool-proof security measures, a large posse of police personnel would be deployed on security duty across the State, including 10,000 in Chennai City. Apart from the security on land, Coast Guard and Indian Navy would be manning the coastal security. Coast Guard and Naval ships would be deployed on security all along the coastline and dorniers would be making routine sorties as part of security measures. In the city, more than 10,000 police personnel would be deployed on security duty. (UNI)
Coast Guard inventory pegged at 300 ships, aircraft
Kolkata: Making steady additions to its inventory, the Indian Coast Guard will boast of an impressive fleet of 200 ships and 100 aircraft by 2020, an officer said here Saturday. “We have been and will continue inducting new ships, vessels and aircraft into our inventory,” Coast Guard Regional Commander (Northeast) and Inspector General K. C. Pande told reporters during the concluding session of a coastal security awareness campaign. “The vision is to have a fleet of 200 ships and 100 aircraft by 2020 and we are steadily progressing in the right direction,” he said, adding that orders had been placed for more than 100 ships and aircraft. This will add to its fleet of over 100 ships and boats, 14 air cushion vehicles (ACVs) and over 60 aircraft including the Dornier Do 228 maritime surveillance aircraft, he added. Expressing concern over increased smuggling, including counterfeit Indian currency from Bangladeshr, Pande said most of this takes place through the land route. He also admitted the existence of several vulnerable stretches in the Sunderbans and adjoining areas posed a threat to maritime security. “There are some vulnerable areas, we cannot say they do not exist. But we are keeping a strict vigil. We are one of the most respected Coast Guards in the world and we constantly endeavour to ensure there is no threat to our maritime security,” said Pande. (IANS)
