SHILLONG: With the visible rise in vehicles plying on the roads of Shillong, the resultant pollution from vehicle emissions is similarly registering new records.
Speaking to reporters on the issue, SP (Traffic) NK Syiem maintained that the pollution caused by the vehicles has to be checked by the State Pollution Control Board.
To reduce such pollution caused by the vehicles, Shillong Traffic Police (STP) has now also decided to work with the State Pollution Control Board to conduct pollution check of the vehicles.
Pollution control is the need of the hour in view of the fact that the number of vehicles have doubled in the last few years in the city which is causing pollution as well as congestion.
According to Syiem, the smaller vehicles cause less pollution but it is the trucks which cause more pollution in the city.
However, he stated that the Traffic Police stops any vehicles if it is releasing heavy smoke and accordingly take action as per the law.
“We will take action if any one complains to us about any vehicles which are causing pollution,” Syiem said.
