Seeks capital punishment for culprits

New Delhi:  Parents of Arunachal Pradesh youth Nido Tania, who died following an alleged racist attack in Delhi, met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday and demanded capital punishment for the perpetrators.
They urged the government to declare January 30 as national anti-racism day in the country and install a statue in memory of their son at the national capital.
After a 30-minute meeting with the Prime Minister, the victim’s father Nido Pavitra told reporters that they had presented a memorandum comprising ten demands to the Prime Minister.
He was part of a seven-member delegation that included his wife Nido Marina and Arunachal Pradesh MP Takam Sanjoy.
“We have submitted a ten-point memorandum to the Prime Minister. He has agreed to the demands,” Pavitra, who is a Congress MLA in Arunachal Pradesh, said.
He said that Singh has also assured security of northeastern students in Delhi. “The Prime Minister is very concerned about Nido Tania’s case. He is also concerned for the northeastern people,” he added.
The delegation also sought action against police officials for allegedlly refusing to register an FIR. “The parents have demanded stern action against erring officials involved in the case, who did not timely register the FIR and did not take care of the medication of the children after the first attack,” Lok Sabha member from Arunachal West, Sanjoy said. Nineteen-year-old Tania, a BA first year student in a private university, had an altercation with some shopkeepers at Lajpat Nagar here on January 29, after they made fun of his hairstyle, following which they allegedly thrashed him.
He was found dead the next day. (PTI)
