SHILLONG: Police have ruled out nexus between KSU and HNLC in the wake of KSU vice-president Fredrick Kharmawphlang joining the rebel outfit.

Speaking to reporters here on Thursday, East Khasi Hills SP M. Kharkrang said that Kharmawphlang joined HNLC on his personal capacity “which has nothing to do with the organization which he represents.”

The police on Thursday had a meeting with the parents of Kharmawphlang to discuss the issue.

According to Kharkrang, the parents told him that they came to know about the matter from the newspapers and it was a shock for them.

Since Kharmawphlang was from Nongthymmai, the police also had a meeting with the members of the KSU, Nongthymmai unit to prevent youths from going astray.

The police also held a meeting with the KSU general secretary Auguster Jyrwa and others to discuss the matter on Wednesday.

The police wanted the KSU leaders to inform it if there was any case of members joining the militant outfit.

Asked whether the hunt of the police for the leaders of various pro-ILP pressure groups resulted in KSU vice-president joining the militant outfit, Kharkrang said that after the talks with Government on January 15, police had not made any attempt to arrest the leaders.

“The issue of ILP is not a valid reason to join HNLC”, Kharkrang added.

According to the SP, it is the first time that a person is openly declaring that he joined the militant group.

According to information, after the January 15 talks with the Government on ILP, Kharmawphlang was still available for a few days in Shillong.

To a question, Kharkrang said that the reports of KSU leader and others joining HNLC will not have any impact as it is a fact that many youths had suffered in the past after they jointed the militant outfit . The SP also claimed that the strength of the HNLC is hardly 10 to 15 and added that the militant outfit does not have any fire power.
