SHILLONG: The self styled commander-in-chief of newly-formed Achik National Liberation Central Army (ANLCA) Sengpan Marak , who was involved in the kidnapping of a Nokma, was arrested by police in East Garo Hills and another ANLCA cadre was lynched in North Garo Hills in two separate incidents on Wednesday.
While police made a breakthrough in arresting Sengpan and one more cadre Grewingstone Marak, who were involved in kidnapping of the Nokma on Wednesday morning, in a separate incident, the people of Mendima , North Garo Hills caught two members of ANLCA and lynched one of them identified as Jehan Momin in the afternoon. Another cadre who was assaulted has been identified as Sengran Sangma.
The duo who were assaulted by the public were admitted at Dainadubi PHC and Jehan Momin succumbed to his injuries at the PHC.
The ANLCA militants who kidnapped the Nokma were arrested from a vehicle and one 7.65mm pistol along with two magazines and 35 rounds were recovered from Grewingston Marak of Chisim Matchokgre, ) under North Garo Hills.
Moreover, a bundle containing 68 live rounds of 7.62 AK- rifle ammunition was recovered from Sengpan Marak from Pakkregre, Rongjeng also from East Garo Hills.
Further search of the vehicle led to the recovery of a plastic bag containing one AK-47 rifle with one magazine wrapped in a blanket along with other incriminating documents.
Sengpan confessed to the police that he was the one who executed several kidnappings and extortions in Songsak and Rongjeng area in East Garo Hills and Dainadubi, Bajengdoba areas under North Garo Hills.
It was under his specific instructions that a businessman identified as Bitnath Marak was killed after he was kidnapped from his house at Nogol woodland, near Mendipather. The militants dumped his body at Rongbu village near Chibongga.
According to Sengpan, the businessman was executed since his brother Weston Marak had deserted ANLCA carrying Rs 11.5 lakh and an AK rifle.
Earlier, beginning of the year, the father of Weston Marak was kidnapped and subsequently released for the son’s desertion from the outfit.
It was on January 23 that the Nokma, Kredinath M Sangma, hailing from Songsak Bonegre village was kidnapped by ANLCA cadres led by Sengpan Marak.
The Nokma was kidnapped for a ransom of Rs 30 lakh after he received land compensation worth Rs 27 lakh from the Government for parting way land for the construction of Shillong-Tura road.
