Police fail to respond to woman’s plea
SHILLONG: A woman had a harrowing experience after she bravely chased a GNLA militant alone expecting police to turn up, but in vain in Tura, West Garo Hills on Wednesday.
According to police sources, one GNLA cadre came to a woman to extort money in Tura.
The woman informed her friend to come to her rescue, but the latter was determined to get the cadre arrested by the police.
Sources said that she even called up Tura SP Mukesh Singh and asked him to send some policemen to arrest the militant.
The GNLA militant came as agreed and started discussing with the woman about the money she should pay.
Meanwhile, her friend, who had informed the SP, waited to identify the militant to the police.
But the police never arrived which compelled the woman to confront the militant herself.
Sensing trouble, the militant took to his heels. She chased him at some distance but was irked by the police for not responding to the information provided for timely intervention.
According to sources, the woman risked her life trusting the police, but police came leisurely at their own pace.
Later, the woman who challenged the militant received a call from the self styled deputy commander of GNLA threatening to eliminate her and her family.
He called her from the cell phone no 8254068924. When the woman verified from the Reliance mobile service, they informed that the number belongs to one Jobbar Ali S/O Monkir Ali, of Makribari, Krishnai, 783126. When verified by the Krishnai Police, it was found that the subscriber was non-existent. Police say that GNLA is using these un-verified SIM cards to indulge in extortion, kidnappings and other criminal activities.
Several attempts to contact Tura SP proved futile.
