FB post sparks communal tension
Dehradun: Communal tension broke out in Nainital district’s Ramnagar town after pictures hurtful to the religious sentiments of a particular community were uploaded on a social networking site, a senior police official said here. Pictures with objectionable content were uploaded by a youth on Facebook, triggering tension late last night in Ramnagar as the members of one community gathered outside the Kotwali and hurled stones at the police station, Additional DG Ram Singh Meena told PTI. Light clashes between members of two separate communities were also reported in the Ramnagar-Shivlalpur areas, he said. However, there has been no report of any injuries so far in the clashes. A 26-year-old youth, identified as one Rajeev, has been arrested for having allegedly uploaded the pictures on the social networking site, the ADG said. The situation is under control in the area with prohibitory orders in place. The Provincial Armed Constabulary has also staged a flag march in the city. “Our priority as of now is to restore order. We shall later start a search for those who engaged in stone pelting at the Kotwali and at some ‘chaurahas’,” DIG (Nainital range), Anand Ram Chauhan, meanwhile, said. (PTI)
Close brothel, orders Delhi court
New Delhi: A special court here ordered shutting down of a brothel here and awarded one year jail term to a woman for pushing a girl into flesh trade. Fast Track court presided by Additional Sessions Judge Kaveri Baweja sentenced one year rigorous imprisonment to a woman under various section of Immoral Trafficking (Prevention) Act. The court in the past week ordered closure of the brothel on GB road, a redlight area. It also slapped a fine of Rs.4,000 on the woman. A complaint was received May 27, 2013 regarding the detention of a Andhra Pradesh woman, who was forced to work as a prostitute. Delhi Police conducted a raid and rescued the victim. The victim alleged that she was brought to Delhi on the promise of a job but was pushed into flesh trade. (IANS)
40 African nations at business conclave
New Delhi: At least 40 African countries are expected to take part in an India-Africa business conclave March 9-11 that will focus on two-way trade and investment. The partner country at the 10th annual CII-EXIM Bank Conclave on India Africa project partnership is Lesotho. The Republic of Congo is the focus country at the three-day conclave. The purpose of the forum is to increase outreach of information on Indian enterprise in the identified sectors in Africa. It will also focus on exploring possibilities of Indian participation in long term projects, initiation of programmes related to capacity building, including resource mobilisation. In the past nine editions of this conclave, 1,985 projects worth $172.25 billion have been discussed. The CII has also tried to promote ‘Brand India’ among African decision-makers and business leaders. (IANS)
Navy completes Tropex war drills in India Ocean Region
New Delhi: The Navy has successfully completed one of its largest war drills spread over Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal region and involving its frontline assets such as INS Chakra and 75 combat and surveillance aircraft. “The Navy’s major annual exercise Theatre Level Operational Readiness Exercise (TROPEX) concluded yesterday involving large scale naval manoeuvres in all three dimensions surface, air and underwater, across the Bay of Bengal, Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean Region (IOR),” a Navy release said today. The month-long exercise was aimed at assessing the operational readiness of naval units, validate the Navy’s war fighting doctrine and integrate newly included capabilities in its ‘Concept of Operations’, it said. Around 60 ships and submarines along with 75 aircraft took part in this exercise, which saw participation of units from Air Force and Coast Guard. The exercise also saw the maiden participation by the newly acquired P 8I Long Range Maritime Patrol aircraft and the nuclear submarine, Chakra. The exercise also provided the Navy with an opportunity to validate its network centric warfare capabilities, with effective utilisation of its recently launched satellite GSAT-7. (PTI)
Case registered against Lankan fishermen, navy
Rameswaram (TN): In what is considered to be the first such action by Tamil Nadu Police,a case has been registered against Sri lankan fishermen for allegedly robbing fishing nets worth Rs.2.80 lakh from an Indian boat last month. Pamban police on Saturday registered cases under IPC sections including 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint) and 352 (punishment for assault or criminal force otherwise than on grave provocation). A fisherman, John Britto, complained that Lankan fishermen robbed their nets when they were fishing in the Palk Strait near Neduntheevu on February 3, police said. Rameswaram Town Police also registered a case against Lankan navalmen for allegedly ramming their ship against an Indian fishing boat and damaging it near Katchatheevu.They also fired in the air to threaten and scare them, a fisherman Sahayaraj said in his complaint, adding, the Lankan navalmen also attacked the boat with iron rods and damaged it. A case has been registered against Lankan Navalmen under various IPC sections including Sec 341, police said. (PTI)
Doctors go on indefinite strike protesting lathicharge
Kanpur: Doctors at a government medical college and hospital here on Saturday went on an indefinite strike in protest against the police lathihcharge against them following their clash with a group of SP party supporters, police said. The strike at Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Medical College Hospital, called by the Indian Median Association has crippled services in various wards at the associated Hallett Hospital. Several private doctors in the city have also joined them in support which is likely to affect patients here. A clash had broken out yesterday between supporters of Samajwadi Party MLA Irfan Solanki and junior doctors of the college after the two sides entered into a brawl, leaving several of them including the legislator injured, police said. Following unruly scenes, the police later resorted to lathicharge to disperse the crowd. The incident left several people, including police personnel, journalists and many civilians injured, sources said. “The way police laticharged our junior doctors and medical students, was very cruel and ruthless and our senior doctors too were not spared and were treated in a very indecent manner”, IMA Kanpur Chapter, President and Chief of Medicine Department at the college, Aarti Lal Chandani told.
