SHILLONG/TURA: The ‘change’ of name of the Congress candidate for the Tura seat from the official list had the elements of suspense and intrigue on Saturday.

Earlier, during the day, the news spread that Daryl William Cheran Momin, the grandson of first Chief Minister of Meghalaya Captain Williamson Sangma got the party ticket.

However, in the evening after the meeting of the Central Election Committee chaired by Congress president, the official list released by the AICC mentioned the name of Zenith Sangma, brother of Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma.

Even the MPCC members in Shillong were confused over the selection of candidate as the official list had Zenith Sangma for Tura seat. During the day, the relatives of Momin even got congratulatory messages from the party leaders from both the state and the Centre.

The father of William Cheran Momin, Fernsen Momin said, “I received congratulatory messages from some leaders of MPCC and also those from Delhi that my son got the ticket and people have been calling me”. He was also surprised to know later that the official list contained not his son’s name. Though the party functionaries have blamed typing mistake for the goof up in the official list, the exact reason is yet to be known as there was no mistake in the case of other 193 names of candidates released by the AICC on Saturday.
