SHILLONG: The Opposition on Tuesday questioned the criteria being adopted by the State Government in selection of schools under the Asian Development Bank funded project for construction of buildings.
During the Question Hour, the Opposition leader Dr Donkupar Roy said that the 100-year-old Presbyterian School at Shella and more than 35 years old Gandhi Memorial school under Umniuh Tmar were omitted from the list under ADB scheme whereas new schools were selected for the construction of buildings. Dr Roy also said the schools where more than 300 students get education were also not selected whereas the schools which are having less number of students were brought under the scheme.
Moreover, the whole West Khasi Hills was left out from the ADB funded scheme. The Government selected 30 schools for the project at the cost of Rs 46. 50 crore. The Deputy Chief Minister in charge education, Dr RC Laloo said that the Government would try to include more schools under the project.
Regarding non-representation from West Khasi Hills, Dr Laloo said that in the second list many schools from the district will be considered.
Regularization
To another question by Dr Roy, the Education Minister said that the Government would speed up the regularization of existing teaching and non-teaching staff of Tirot Sing Syiem Memorial School , Laitkynsiew.
Institutions
In reply to another question tabled by Dr Roy, Dr Laloo said that the process of setting up of residential schools in the community and rural development blocks is going on.
He also said that while one engineering college will come up in Ampati in South West Garo Hills, another will be established at Jowai and the process of setting up of these colleges is on. The land had been allotted for the engineering colleges, he added
