Tripura takes steps to raise conviction rate

Agartala: Chief Minister Manik Sarkar reasserted in the assembly on Wednesday that the state has undertaken multi-pronged strategies to raise conviction rate in the state especially in the cases of crime against women.

Replying to a query of opposition MLA Ratan Lal Nath, Sarkar urged all the political parties and social organizations and institutions to come forward and manage the situation.

Tripura has recorded only 15 per cent conviction rates in last year against the national average of 42 per cent, which drew criticism at several levels.

He, however, pointed out that police officers and public prosecutors have been imparting training regular training for strengthening investigation skill and efficient persuasion of the cases in the court respectively besides, sending judicial officers for special training in different training institutes in and outside the state.

He voiced alarm at the rising incidents of atrocities against women had a rapid rise in Udaipur sub-division in Gomati district in 2013 compared to last two years.

Sarkar said as many as 89 complaints of atrocities against women were registered with the Udaipur Women’s Police Station in 2013 alone.

The highest figures were 57 at Kailashahar police station and 51 in Dharmanagar police station in last two years.

He also admitted that 22 incidents of rape were registered with the Udaipur Women’s Police Station in 2013.

The figures were the state’s highest in the year in a single police station. (UNI)
