Guwahati: More synonymous with controversies ranging from his citizenship to sex scandals, three-time former MP Moni Kumar Subba Friday entered the electoral ring as an Independent after his parent party Congress denied him a ticket in Assam.
Subba filed nomination as an Independent candidate for Tezpur Lok Sabha constituency on the last date of filing nomination.
Tezpur goes to the polls in the first phase on April 7 next.
Still a member of the Congress, lottery baron Subba had lobbied hard for a party ticket after he represented Tezpur in the Lok Sabha for three terms from 1998-2009 and contested unsuccessfully in 2009 election.
However, the controversies surrounding him, especially the doubt over his citizenship credentials, cost Subba the Congress ticket with the party announcing its young legislator Bhupen Bora as the nominee for Tezpur constituency, shortly after declaration of election schedule.
Subba’s decision to contest as an Independent has not gone down well with the Congress and the party has warned of disqualifying him from its primary membership if he fails to withdraw his nomination.
Subba had faced a CBI enquiry over charges of fleeing from Nepal to escape prosecution in a murder case.
He was also accused of using faking certificates to prove himself as an Indian citizen.
The CBI had unearthed multiple birth certificates of Subba during the course of its investigations, with the MP himself furnishing different sets while filing nomination for the previous Lok Sabha polls.
He was more recently embroiled in a sex tape controversy and also faced molestation charges in a different case. (UNI)
