JOWAI: In a gruesome act of violence against the fairer sex, a man in Jaintia Hills killed his wife on suspicion of adultery and dumped her body in an abandoned coal mine.

Ladrymbai Police along with doctors and a magistrate in the presence of family members and friends recovered the highly decomposed body of the young woman who was murdered by her husband on New Year’s day. The body was exhumed from an abandoned coal mine at a place called Um-tah in Jalyiah village, East Jaintia Hills District on Friday.

The woman identified as Daphishisha Kharsati from Mawryngkneng village was murdered by her husband Kheinlang Dkhar (23) of Ladrymbai Datsimpein.

Sources claimed that the woman was killed on suspicion of adultery.

“On January 1, the husband along with his friend Roskil Chyrmang (22) took the victim to a deserted place (at Um-tah) and hit her on the head several times with a hammer,” sources said adding that the duo buried the woman’s body in an abandoned coal mine after the crime.

Dkhar confessed to the killing during interrogation by police and also led the cops to the site where the body was dumped. The body was recovered on Friday in the presence of the in-charge Ladrymbai Outpost, a magistrate and two doctors.

After completion of the post-mortem and necessary formalities, the body was handed over to the family members.

While the victim was born and brought up in Jowai the accused hailed from Jalyiah village.

The main accused, Dkhar is also learnt to have assaulted two of his ex-wives in the past.

One of his wives was badly assaulted in February last and a case of attempted murder was registered in this connection. The accused frequently assaulted his first wife but intervention from VDP members of Jalyiah ensured that she was safe.

Later Dkhar married one Daplin Kyndait of Iongkaluh village but gave her up soon for Daphishisha Kharsati. But he suspected Kharsati of having illicit relations with other men and planned to take her life. After killing Kharsati, Dkhar returned back to Daplin but was denied this time. Furious over the refusal, he decided to finish her off too. It was on February 21 that he laid a trap to kill Daplin and at around 2:30 AM when she returned home from a district council poll campaign Dkhar stabbed her several times with a knife and also hit her on the head with a brick. “Being certain that Daplin was dead, he came to Ladrymbai outpost to surrender for the killing,” a reliable source informed. Following a complaint lodged from Daplin’s family members, a case was registered against him and the court remanded the accused in judicial custody. In the meantime, a missing report was lodged following the disappearance of Kharsati. Later, Dkhar spilled the beans after interrogation on the matter.
