SHILLONG: The Garo National Council (GNC) has decided to extend support to NPP candidate Purno A Sangma who is contesting the Tura Lok Sabha seat.

The decision to support Sangma was taken at a meeting held at the residence GNC president Clifford R Marak in Tura on Saturday.

In a statement issued here on Sunday, Challang Ch. Momin, president of GNC youth wing said that the party was not ready to put up its own candidate and “instead the party is extending its sincere support to the NPP candidate”.

The GNC decided to extend support to Sangma as per the request of WR Kharlukhi, the president of the NPP State unit.

Interestingly, Clifford Marak had unsuccessfully contested against Sangma for the Tura seat in the 1999 Lok Sabha polls, securing 4561 votes.
