Enthusiastic voters throng special shows

SHILLONG: To make people understand the importance of exercising their right to franchise and to come out in large numbers to cast their vote during election, the office of the District Election Officer, East Khasi Hills, Shillong on Saturday, organised a special kite flying show for the kids and kite flying competition for all eligible voters at Golflinks.
The day long programme also included an air show, mawpoint (traditional game) and phawer competition together with lighting of 1001 lights and flying of LED kites.
The Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills, Sanjay Goyal handed the certificate and cash prize to the winners of the kite flying competition. Johny Kharkongor bagged the first prize followed by Anthony Nongkhlaw and Y Sun who secured second and third places respectively.
In the Mawpoint competition the winner was Seng Khasi Pynthor A and the runner up was Seng Khasi Pynthor B while the third prize went to Leslee and Group.
Banker Kharkongor got the first prize in Phawer competition while the second and third prize went to CTE, PGT, Shillong and Banteilang S Nongdhar respectively. The winner in every category received Rs 10000 for the first prize, Rs 7000 and Rs 5000 for the second and third respectively.
The special attraction of the day was the performance of Shillong Chamber Choir and magic show by John Lanong to entertain the crowd and participants during the event. People also thronged at the various food stalls installed at the venue apart from game stalls. There was also an interaction with the people and awareness campaign through the democracy van.
Run to Vote flags off awareness campaign in Tura
The Run to Vote marathon organised by the Deputy Commissioner (Election) in collaboration with the District Sports Office flagged off from Tura Chandmary playground on Friday kicked off a series of activities being organised by the West Garo Hills District Administration under SVEEP II plan.
The marathon was part of the district administration’s bid to bolster maximum turn out during the Lok Sabha election on April 9 by creating awareness among the masses on the electoral process through a series of awareness campaigns comprising of fun filled entertaining activities for all ages.
The marathon was followed by fun kite flying and kite flying competition during the day.a
