SHILLONG: AICC general secretary in charge Meghalaya, Luizinho Faleiro, has downplayed the rebellion in the party against Vincent H Pala, the official candidate of the party contesting the Shillong seat.

Speaking to The Shillong Times over the phone on Wednesday, Faleiro said the Congress would secure both Shillong and Tura seats.

Pala is facing rebellion from some legislators and party men for his alleged interference in last year’s Assembly elections by way of working against the official candidates of the party.

However, Pala had denied these allegations by saying that he was not involved in the selection of candidates for the Assembly polls.

Faleiro would arrive in Shillong on Thursday to have a meeting with the party leaders followed by a public meet in the evening.

He will also address the media to clear the air about the resentment of some party leaders against Pala.

The next day he will leave for Tura to address a public rally for the Congress candidate Daryl William Cheran Momin.

The AICC leader, while appreciating several initiatives undertaken by Pala, said that thanks to the efforts of the Shillong MP, the Shillong Bypass had become a reality.

According to Faleiro, several Central schemes including important road constructions were monitored by Pala.

On the directives he had sent to MPCC president DD Lapang to quell the move of sabotage in the polls for the Shillong seat, the AICC leader said that he had sent similar letters to the state party leaders of as many as 11 states.

Regarding the alleged lethargy among the Congress leaders in Shillong in the run upto the polls, Faleiro said, “People of Meghalaya are highly literate. The writing is there on the wall as far as the results are concerned. But, there is nothing to be complacent”.
