Diphu (Assam): Security measures have been stepped up following threats from militants in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district, falling in sensitive Autonomous District (ST) constituency, going to polls in the second phase on April 12.

Threats from militant outfit Karbi Peoples’ Liberation Tigers(KPLT) and stray incidents of violence along the troubled Assam-Nagaland border of the district have made the constituency sensitive with security forces stepping up operations, Karbi Anglong Superintendent of Police Mugdhajyoti Mahanta told PTI.

Helicopter surveillance will begin from April 10 and additional five companies of para-military forces along with four hundred armed home guards would be deployed from Tuesday, he said.

Choppers will keep track of movement of extremists, especially in militant active areas of Borpung, Upper Tarapung, Lower Tarapung, Thedong and Arlong-ti.

In militant prone areas, security personnel belonging to Nagaland Armed Police, Railway Armed Police, Assam Police Battalions, Cobra and Commando forces have already been deployed, Mahanta said.

The police have so far arrested nine militants and seized 14 assorted arms with 154 ammunition and a crude bomb during operations while 154 persons have been arrested under the CRPC Act.

During the ongoing encroachment problem along the Assam-Nagaland border in Daldali Reserve Forest, 52 persons have been arrested and eight cases were registered in Diphu Sadar Police station, Mahanta added.

For the first time, the ceasefire cadre of KLNLF, UKDA and KRA residing in five designated camps will cast their votes through postal ballot system. (PTI)
