Border liquor shops in 2-day closure

Assam polls

SHILLONG: Bars and liquor shops in Meghalaya located near the border of Assam close to Guwahati will have to remain closed on two days in the current month due to polls in Assam.

The Deputy Commissioner, Ri Bhoi District has directed all IMFL Retail Shops/ Bars/ Hotels/ Bonded Warehouses/ Bottling Units/ Country made Spirit Shops/ Outstills/ Breweries and Canteens located in Khanapara, Baridua, Jorabat, and Byrnihat in Ri Bhoi District to remain close on April 23 and 24 in view of the general elections to the Lok Sabha 2014 to be held in the State of Assam.

Polling in the Guwahati Lok Sabha seat is due on April 24.

It may be mentioned that due to the proximity of the Meghalaya border from Guwahati in these areas, there is a thriving business in liquor in the inter-state border. Prices in the two states vary.

In Exercise of power conferred under section 52 (1) M.E. Act, the Deputy Commissioner (Excise), West Khasi Hills District , Nongstoin declared dry day throughout the entire West Khasi Hills District on April 18 on account of Good Friday.

Therefore, all liquor shops including IMFL shops, Bar hotels, C.A. Bars, C.S Shops, Bonded Warehouse and out till shall remain closed on the above mentioned dates and violation of the above order will amount to punishment as per Exercise Rules and Acts.
