JOWAI: Coal mines in East Jaintia Hills continue to claim the lives of labourers working inside the mines in different part of the district.
In the latest mishap reported from the district, a labourer identified as Abdul Kalam (50) died on the way to Khliehriat CHC while his son escaped with grievous injuries after they fell into a deep coal pit located at Moolait village in East Jaintia Hills on Sunday.
Sources informed that the deceased along with his son were climbing down into the pit, when they fell down and suffered serious injuries. Both the victims were rushed to Khliehriat CHC but the father succumbed midway. “The son is in a critical condition and after spending a night at Khliehriat CHC he was shifted to Kalain in Assam,” a source said on Tuesday.
The coal mine owner, Ms Pyllang Dkhar of Ladrymbai Datsimpein, lodged a complaint with Khliehriat Police in this connection.

April 13: Pushpa Bh. Thapa (32) died in a coal quarry at Wailong, Sutnga, when a boulder fell over him. As a result, he sustained injuries and later died on the way to hospital.
March 31: Md. Parbul Haque died on the spot when a coal quarry collapsed.
February 25: Rowan Rai (39) slipped and fell into a coal mine at Cement Area, Sutnga and succumbed to his injuries on the way to hospital.
February 15: Two coal labourers Md. Abdul Hannan (19) and Md. Abdul Wahap (25) died when a crane collapsed in a coal quarry at Wahlyngkam.
January 7: Abu Bakar sustained injuries when a coal quarry collapsed at Umsei and later succumbed to his injuries at Khliehriat CHC.
January 6: Banu Marak fell into a coal quarry at Jalyiah village and died on the spot.
January 1: Phising Suchiang slipped and fell into an abandoned coal pit, while he was on his way from Khliehriat towards Wahsiej, Rymbai, and succumbed to his injuries.
