Heat wave forces 2-day-holiday for Kamrup schools, colleges
Guwahati: All schools and educational institutions have been closed due to the prevailing heat wave conditions for two days from tomorrow in Assam’s Kamrup (Metro) district. Kamrup (Metro) Deputy Commissioner Ashutosh Agnihotri issued an order today directing all schools and educational institutions, both government and private, to be kept closed on April 25 and 26. A heat wave condition is prevailing in the state with temperatures rising to 40.1 degrees Celsius today, the highest in the last 15 years. According to Regional Meteorology Centre, the prevailing heat wave condition was due to westerly hot winds from the Gangetic plains in the lower atmosphere with no moisture feed from the Bay of Bengal to trigger rainfall. Woman shot dead in Karbi Anglong
Diphu (Assam): A woman was shot dead by two unidentified armed persons outside her office here on Thursday in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district, police said. The woman, identified as Shwerdhipen Bapee, was a clerk in the Irrigation Department and was coming out of the office when two armed youths shot at her from point blank range, killing her on the spot, they said. The police suspect that the woman’s husband, Arnold Teron, who was a former UPDS militant could be behind the killing as the duo had a strained marital relationship. A massive hunt has been launched to nab Teron along with the assailants who managed to escape from the spot, police added. (PTI)
Four militants nabbed, recruiting centre busted
Imphal: Troops and Manipur Police personnel on Thursday busted a recruiting centre and nabbed four militants. Manipur Police and 16 Assam Rifles apprehended three KCP cadres including a woman from Lamboikhul Makha Leikai near Sagolmang. The operation was conducted from April 23 and continued till Thursday . One Naocha Potsangbam was apprehended and he disclosed the names of three militants who are actively involved in conducting recruitment. Based on the information provided the combined force nabbed Chabungbam Nobin, Itocha, and Kamla Devi. Nobin and Kamla recruited people and Kamla’s son is now at Myanmar. (UNI)
UPSC Chairman visits Arunachal to strengthen the state Commission
Itanagar: The Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt Gen (Retd) Nirbhay Sharma has requested the visiting Chairman of Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), Prof D P Agrawal to aid and advice the State Commission and also facilitates in streamlining it in the line of the Union Public Service Commission. The UPSC chairman, along with the joint secretary, T V Dinesh was called on the Governor at Raj Bhawan, here on Thursday. They discussed on various issues, including strengthening the State Public Service Commission, intellectual connectivity to the North East region and the State, enhancement of intellectual capacity through regular interactions and seminars in the state, official sources informed. The Governor, who is a former member of the UPSC, also urged Prof Agarwal to initiate steps to encourage more and more candidates from the North East region especially Arunachal Pradesh to go for premier Public Service examinations. Prof Agarwal, who is on a four-day maiden visit to Arunachal Pradesh will be interacting with intellectuals, educationists and senior citizens of the state. He will also attend a departmental promotion committee meeting for Indian Police Service of Arunachal Pradesh Cadre, sources added. (UNI)
