Biggest cannabis recovery in Tripura in five years

Agartala: The BSF and district administration of Sipahijala in Tripura recovered cannabis worth Rs 60 lakh during two joint raids on Sunday from two villages, the police said. Acting on a tip-off, a team of BSF and district administration officials led by Sub-divisional Magistrate of Sonamura raided eight houses in Kalamchoura village and recovered 1,000 kgs of cannabis worth Rs 50 lakh today, they said adding, the same team also raided Indiranagar village in the same district and recovered 200 kgs of cannabis worth Rs 10 lakh in the open market. The police said it was the highest recovery of cannabis in the state in the past five years. Cultivators of cannabis were involved with smuggling and were taking advantage of the porous international border in Sonamura subdivision, senior police officers said. Sources in the BSF said out of the 856 km long Indo-Bangla international border 80 per cent was fenced and smugglers were taking advantage of the unfenced stretches. (PTI)

Manipur prepares for Prez’s visit despite opposition from militants

Imphal: President Pranab Mukherjee will attend the 14th convocation of Manipur University on April 29. Security has been beefed up and combing operations were conducted at various places. Entry to Centenary hall of the University has been sealed for security reasons. Honorary degrees will be conferred to former Chief Minister, Rishang Keishign and Laishram Birendrakumar and to the students by the President. The umbrella of the militant outfits operating in Manipur the Coordination Committee has called a 12 hour general strike to oppose the visit. H Poirei of the Coordination Committee said general strike will be called on the day from 0600 hours to 1800 hours as the visit of the President is to extend hegemony and colonialism in the region. Five dead in road mishap

Guwahati: At least five persons were killed and seven injured in a road accident near Pathsala of western Assam’s Barpeta district on Sunday. Local reports said a vegetable-carrying truck met with the accident as the driver avoided a head-on collision with a passenger-carrying mini vehicle. A person died on the spot, while four others succumbed at the Pathsala civil hospital. The injured were also rushed to the Pathsala civil hospital. All victims were traveling in the truck, on way to a nearby market with their agricultural produce. (UNI)

One killed in bus mishap

Aizawl: A 50-year-old man of Darlawn town in northeastern Mizoram died when the bus he was travelling in ran off the road around 1200 noon on Sunday. Lalkhawngaiha died instantly as the bus rolled down the hill for about 200 metres and fell into a gorge. The bus was carrying 12 members of Darlawn Presbyterian church choir who were to present a choir at a Presbyterian assembly afternoon service at Sawleng village, not far from Darlawn. Four of the injured were stated to be critical and were referred to Aizawl for better treatment. (UNI)

Son hacks mother to death

Silchar: A man killed his mother in a remote village in Assam’s Cachar district on Friday. Police said the gruesome incident was occurred at Jeebangram village near Dholai, 30 km from here. The sources said Binoy Roy(42) killed his mother with a sharp weapon inside their house over a family dispute at 1130 hours. Kanaklata Roy (59), the mother died on the spot. Neighbours soon rushed to the spot after hearing about the incident and informed police. Cops from Dholai police station reached the remote village in the evening and recovered the body of the woman from a pool of blood. The body was sent to Silchar Medical Collage Hospital today for autopsy. Police arrested Binoy who was staying at home after committing the crime. The man, a labourer in profession, is being interrogated at the custody of Dholai police. (UNI)
