SHILLONG: Residents living in the bordering villages often allege encroachment by Assam authorities and such reports keep on coming from Block 1 and II in Jaintia Hills district.

West Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner PS Dkhar while reacting to the issue said that the encroachment by Assam is a common feature in Block 1 and both the district administration of West Jaintia Hills as well as Assam counterpart keeps on discussing the matter to bring peace and normalcy in the affected areas.

There were also reports in the past where Assam Government allegedly tried to install electric polls in the area.

However, the DC said that Assam wants to take the electricity to their police camp through parts of Meghalaya and residents of Meghalaya are against it.

Meanwhile, reports also suggest that residents of Mawlan village with Assam have alleged that Assam government had tried to bribe them with Rs 5 Lakh for constructing a police outpost in the area.

Of late there are reports of alleged belligerence of Assam government in border villages of Meghalaya. Recently, there were allegations by local villagers in Khanduli, West Jaiñtia Hills that the Assam police platoon have set up camp in the village.

A former Rangbah Shnong of Mukroh village recently informed that defying the status quo agreement between Assam and Meghalaya, Assam Police personnel have been allegedly trespassing into Mukroh village in West Jaintia Hills.

“Assam Police personnel have been coming to the village regularly since April 4 and for unknown reasons they dug a hole about one square feet wide and 4 feet deep and buried some material inside,” the former Rangbah Shnong, who did not wish to be identified, said recently.
