SHILLONG: The State Government will examine the functioning of the Meghalaya Transport Corporation (MTC), an undertaking of the Government, which is running at a huge loss.
Transport Minister HDR Lyngdoh said that Government will have to look into the functioning of the MTC in order to improve its services.
The statement comes in the wake of the below par performance of the MTC.
“We have to undertake a fresh exercise to make MTC viable and profitable,” Lyngdoh said.
Earlier, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma had stated that the Corporation can generate revenue if it is run professionally.
Reacting to a query Lyngdoh said that advent of private players led to the downfall of MTC.
The MTC has around 55 buses at the moment and caters to passengers travelling to Tura and Williamnagar in Garo Hills areas of the State and Guwahati, Karimganj and Silchar in Assam.
The MTC also operates the Pawan Hans helicopter services on the Shillong-Guwahati-Tura route.
