SHILLONG: At a time when United Democratic Party is demanding a CBI probe into the Myntdu Leshka Hydro Project (MLHEP), the Power Minister Clement Marak has asserted that MLHEP is not a failed project.

Speaking to The Shillong Times on Tuesday, Marak said that the project was now generating a fair amount of power since there was water in the catchment area. ) “MLHEP is a run of the river project and it produces substantial power during rainy season when its catchments are full,” he said.

According to Marak, the project which had been criticized by every one in 2013-14 generated Rs 125 crore out of which Rs 111 crore was to be paid for the various loans and the net profit from the project was Rs 14 crore.

Smelling a scam, UDP had earlier demanded a CBI probe into the multi-crore MLHEP while questioning the huge escalation in the cost of the MLHEP from the initial Rs. 300 crore to almost Rs. 1300 crore.
