BSF seize brown sugar; arrests made in city

SHILLONG: The BSF troops deployed in South West Khasi Hills apprehended two drug smugglers and seized brown sugar worth Rs 5 lakh from Barsora area near international border on June 8, a delayed report said.

Later, three more associates of the smugglers were arrested from here on June 9.

The BSF in a statement issued here on Tuesday said that the BSF troops first held a drug smuggler identified as Md. Jiaual Rahman (34) from Thoubal, Manipur along with his associate identified as Nikhil Bhutia (36) of Happy Valley, Shillong from Barsora.

During search, the BSF recovered a packet containing 100 gm brown sugar, worth around Rs.5 lakh and one mobile with Bangladesh SIM card besides other items.

On questioning, they revealed that the brown sugar was brought from Shillong and was to be handed over to some Bangladeshi nationals on the international border as a sample.

They further revealed that their three accomplishes were staying in Shillong, and accordingly, on June 9 at around 11 am, the BSF troops along with Meghalaya police, apprehended Hafiz Kefayatullah (26) Basiruddin,Badre Alam (29) and Moulana Alimuddin all from Thoubal, Manipur in Police Bazar.

The arrested persons confessed that there is a racket active from Manipur which brings the drugs consignment from Myanmar and it is further brought to Shillong from Manipur.
