SHILLONG: Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma indicated that the threat of GNLA to the Congress workers in Garo Hills had led to the defeat of the party candidate from the Tura seat in the recent Lok Sabha poll.

“During the election, the GNLA was threatening the Congress workers which itself had so much of ramifications in the election result,” Sangma said while replying on the general discussion on the budget in the Assembly on Wednesday.

The Chief Minister said that there was a news report which said that the Government did not send the names of mediators for peace talks with GNLA to MHA.

Following this, the GNLA immediately issued a threat on why the Government had misled the people regarding peace talks. The Chief Minister said that the outfit had also said that if the Congress party does not come with clarification on the communication sent to MHA on the peace talks, all the party workers campaigning during the election would receive bullets.

Later the Government clarified on the matter.

“I was later informed by some of the party workers that the newspaper reports about the threat by the GNLA were circulated to the people. This shows who is having links with whom,” Sangma said without further elaborating on the matter.

The Chief Minister, however, said that the clarification of the Government regarding the issue, however, did not reach the nook and corner of Garo Hills.
