SHILLONG: The Meghalaya State Women’s Commission (MSCW) chairperson, Theilin Phanbuh has advocated on the need to open one more human rights centre in Garo Hills.
The statement came from the MSCW chairperson after she inaugurated a centre for human rights in Lady Keane College recently.
The opening up a human rights centre in Garo Hills assumes great significance in view of the fact that two custodial deaths have been reported in Garo Hills in last one month besides many cases of alleged fake encounter has also been reported.
The Centre for Human Rights works towards human rights education, a greater awareness of human rights, the wide dissemination of publications on human rights, and the improvement of the rights of women, people living with HIV, indigenous peoples, sexual minorities and other disadvantaged or marginalised persons or groups across the continent.
Speaking to The Shillong Times, Phabuh said that after assessing the performance of the newly opened human Rights Centre in Lady Keane, the Commission may advise some other colleges across the state to open similar centers.
She also said that there is a need to create awareness among the people about human rights right at the school and community level.
