Dehradun: A year after a massive deluge hit Uttarakhand causing extensive damage to areas close to Kedarnath, authorities have so far recovered 44 skeletal remains of the victims from the valley since March this year.
DIG G S Martolia who heads a Task Force constituted recently to carry out intensive combing operation in the area today said 44 skeletal remains have been found till date from different areas in the Kedar valley and cremated.
However, for the past 24 hours despite an intense search operation in the valley no fresh skeletal remains have been found, he said. “We conducted a combing operation in the higher reaches at Gomkara located at about 10,500 ft above Gaurikund on way to Kedarnath and through the ridges along Toshi road near Trijuginarayan till late last evening but no bodies were found,” he said.
These areas are in focus at present as there were reports that there are bodies still lying in the surrounding forests, the DIG said.
Today also the operation continues in these areas but no fresh skeletal remains have been recovered so far, he said. However, the combing operation by the 22-member STF will continue till the valley is cleared of bodies, he said.
He said they are being assisted in the exercise by forest department personnel acquainted with the topography of the area.
Recovery of more bodies from the valley despite a year after the tragedy which struck the state on June16-17, 2013 has heated the political temperatures in Uttarakhand with opposition BJP demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Harish Rawat for the insensitive manner in which the whole issue was handled.
“We have long been saying that there are hundreds of bodies still lying in areas adjoining Kedarnath. The recent recovery of bodies from Junglechatti vindicates our stand. “When I said that the entire valley should be handed over to the army as there were bodies still lying near the shrine and Junglechatti areas I was accused of spreading a canard,” Leader of Opposition in the state assembly Ajay Bhatt said in a statement here.
“Now it is clear who misled the nation about presence of bodies in the area and played with the sentiments of those who lost their kin in the tragedy. The chief minister should stop blaming others and step down immediately,” he said.
Rawat to remain hospitalised for some more time
Dehradun: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat, who was admitted to AIIMS in Delhi on June 13 after sustaining a neck injury during a rough chopper ride, is likely to remain hospitalised for some more time as he is still under observation, his aide said here.
The doctors are divided over whether Rawat should go for an operation or not, the Chief Minister’s media incharge Surendra Kumar told PTI.
“Doctors attending on him at AIIMS are not one in their opinion. Some of them say he should go for an operation while some others say he should wait for the neck injury (a cervical one fracture) to heal on its own. It will have to be seen what they finally advise,” Kumar said.
As of now it is not clear when the Chief Minister will be discharged from AIIMS and permitted to resume his duties here, Kumar said. (PTI)
