State to set up skill devp centres

SHILLONG: The govern-ment has decided to set up of three centres of excellence for human capital development in the State.

“We have approved the proposal to create these centres of excellence to meet the shortfall of human development index in the State,” Chief Minister Mukul Sangma told newsmen after a Cabinet meeting here on Thursday.

The Government has tied up with the multi-national group Paranet Technical India Limited, a software giant, to jointly fund the proposed human development programme in these centres.

As per the agreement, the Chief Minister said that the firm would fund 90 per cent of the expenditures for the programme while the remaining ten per cent would be borne by the State Government.

Out of the total Rs 160.56 crore which has been earmarked for the programme in each of these centres, he said that the contribution of the State Government would be Rs 15.55 crore.

“The firm has decided to implement this programme only in Meghalaya as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) component,” Sangma said.

Informing that even though the original proposal was to set up five such centres, Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Education Prof RC Laloo informed that the Government decided to start the centres in the three existing polytechnics in Shillong, Jowai and Tura.

“A total number of 2500 seats will be available in each of these centres,” Deputy Chief Minister said.

The Chief Minister said that the State Government was contemplating to appoint a full-fledged director who would be asked to oversee the implementation of this programme.

Compensation Scheme: Meanwhile, he informed that the Cabinet has decided to return the proposed Victim Compensation Scheme (VCS) since the same needs to be further improved. “We have referred back it since some fine-tuning of certain sections is required. The Government will come up with a new scheme to help victims of various crimes,” Sangma said.
