Umsuwai residents furious with Brahmaputra Board

NONGPOH: The people of Lamalong village under Mawhati Constituency on Saturday expressed their strong resentment against the Brahmaputra Board official who surpassed the village leaders in making the joint inspection to Umsuwai area falling under the proposed areas of the Killing Hydro Electricity project.

Lamalong Rangbah Shnong of the Raid Namsa Poket Umbah said that it was decided with the board that prior to inspection, the authorities will hold a public meeting at Umsuwai village at 12pm on Saturday where a large number of residents turned up for the meeting. However he said that the Board did not stick to the decision did not turn up for the meeting and went ahead with the inspection on their own.

Hitting out against the indifferent attitude of the board against them, the Lamalong Rangbah Shnong reiterated their stern opposition to the proposed construction of the Killing Hydro electricity project in Umiam River by the Assam government which would augment power supply to Assam.

The local residents within the vicinity of the proposed project site have taken a unanimous decision to oppose the project. The people decided to oppose the project as it will wipe out their agricultural fields and villages which are irreplaceable. The project will submerge 32 villages under 7 polling stations of Amri Assembly Constituency in Assam and four villages under 2 polling stations of Mawhati Assembly Constituency in Meghalaya.
