Tuskers kill teacher in Garo Hills

TURA: In yet another case of man-elephant conflict an LP school teacher was trampled to death by wild elephants at Dapgre under Dalu in East Garo Hills District at around 2:30 am on Thursday.

31-year-old Warson Ch Sangma of Gasuapara and a teacher of Doragre LP School was killed.

According to family members the victim and four others were keeping vigil near Dalu Dapgre High School knowing about the presence of a herd of elephant in nearby Kongtokpara Village. The herd numbering three appeared so suddenly that the victim failed to get to safety while the others managed to flee.

An eye witness at the scene said that while one of the elephants kept away the other two repeatedly trampled and crushed the victim to death.

The elephant herd which reportedly made its way towards the Purakhasia-Barengapara Road after the incident is also said to have damaged a few houses and trampled a domestic pig in nearby Godagre village in the same district.
